Joshua Tree National Park has many interesting and beautiful places to see and many backcountry roads to explore, and offers many guided tours to enhance your experience. The Keys Ranch Guided Walking Tour is led by rangers and explores the historic Desert Queen Ranch complete with the ranch house, school house, store, workshop, orchard, and much of the equipment used during the 60 years the ranch was in use by the Keys family.
The performing arts are also represented in Twentynine Palms by Theatre 29 (1.5 mi) which offers award-winning musicals, dramas, and comedies. There is even a classic drive-in theater, the Smith's Ranch Drive-In Movie Theatre (1.9 mi) offering movies beneath the stars since 1954. Desert art abounds in Twentynine Palms with numerous art galleries featuring the art of local and regional artists. In fact, Twentynine Palms is widely known for its outdoor gallery murals depicting the history of the town and the beauty of the region. The Twentynine Palms Art Gallery (1.1 mi) features a variety of work by desert artists, as well as a gift shop, and for outstanding desert landscapes, visit Chuck Caplinger's Desert Art Studio (5.1 mi).
In addition to the beautiful Joshua Tree National Park, there are other national landmarks and wilderness areas to visit. Cleghorn Wilderness Area, Sheephole Wilderness Area, and Mojave National Preserve offer hours or days of exploring all the interesting features present in those areas.
Twentynine Palms has a rich and colorful history and the museums of the area have many exhibits depicting that history. One local museum is the Old Schoolhouse Museum (1.0 mi), a schoolhouse that was originally built in 1927 and is operated by the Twentynine Palms Historical Society; another is the Joshua Tree National Park Visitor Center (1.8 mi), which offers exhibits and information about the history of Joshua Tree National Park and the people who haved lived there.
The City of Twentynine Palms, California has many exciting events year round. Local annual events have been held for decades, and include art and music festivals, car shows and motorcycle racing, historical festivals and events, and programs in the Joshua Tree National Park.
29 Palms has one city golf course, Roadrunner Dunes, and the Marine base also has a golf course, Desert Winds. Both are open to the public. Roadrunner Dunes is a 9-hole links style course that offers the finest greens in the desert, water obstacles, sand bunkers, and doglegs. Desert Winds is a military golf course located at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center. It is open to the public and offers 18 holes of golf on a championship-rated course, a driving range and putting greens.
